Can Gower homeowners get the full £9,000 heat pump grant?
Many can. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays a standard £7,500 towards an air source or ground source heat pump, and since 21 July 2026 an additional £1,500 is available where the property is off the mains gas grid and currently heated by oil or LPG. Because large parts of Gower have no mains gas connection, a high proportion of properties on the peninsula qualify for the full £9,000. The uplift is time limited and ends on 31 March 2027, so it is worth checking your eligibility now. We confirm this before you commit to anything.
Is a heat pump cheaper to run than oil or LPG on Gower?
Usually, yes, and the gap is widest against LPG. A well-designed air source heat pump delivers roughly three and a half units of heat for every unit of electricity it draws, so your effective cost per unit of heat is far lower than the electricity price suggests. Oil and LPG prices are also volatile and delivery costs to the peninsula are higher than average. Do I need planning permission for a heat pump on Gower?
In most cases no. Welsh permitted development rights were widened on 1 June 2026, removing the old three metre boundary rule. A detached home can now have up to two air source heat pumps and other homes one, provided the outdoor unit is no larger than 1.5 cubic metres. Gower is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and includes conservation areas and listed buildings, where extra restrictions apply, such as not siting a unit on a wall or roof fronting a highway. We check the position for your specific property and deal with Swansea Council where an application is needed.
Will salt air from the coast damage a heat pump?
Not if the system is specified and sited properly. Coastal Gower properties are exposed to salt-laden air, which can corrode standard outdoor units over time. We select units with appropriate coatings and corrosion protection, position them to limit direct exposure to prevailing onshore winds and salt spray, and set a maintenance schedule that keeps warranties valid. Will a heat pump work in an older stone Gower cottage?
Yes, with the right design.
